Barcelona in winter is a great choice if you want to experience the city without the summer crowds and heat. It’s actually one of my favourite seasons here. While it’s not warm enough to swim in the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona and its surroundings offer plenty of charm and things to do during the cooler months.

Is Barcelona worth visiting in winter?
You can visit Barcelona year-round, but visiting Barcelona in winter comes with some great advantages. It is less crowded with tourists, and this means that hotel and flight prices are usually lower during this time of the year. Furthermore, the weather is pleasantly mild, and it gets much more sun compared to most of Europe. Daytime temperatures often hover around 12–17°C (mid-50s to low 60s °F), which makes sightseeing and outdoor exploring much more comfortable than in the summer heat. You can enjoy the city at a more relaxed pace. If you want to read more about the weather in Barcelona check out our weather per month page.
Best things to do in Barcelona in winter
Even when the temperatures drop, Barcelona is still an amazing place to visit during the winter. There are a lot of things to do in Barcelona in winter and on top of that the sun is often there to make everything even better. Here are some of my favourite things to do in Barcelona during a winter visit.
Barcelona’s amazing food and drinks
You can always enjoy good food in Barcelona, but in winter the atmosphere becomes extra cozy. Restaurants and bars have a warm atmosphere inside, perfect for long dinners with a glass of wine or cava. One of my favourite food spots to visit in winter in Barcelona is El Nacional on Passeig de Gràcia. This is a grand indoor food hall with several bars and eateries under one roof. The setting is beautiful. Of course, there are lots of other places to go for tapas or paella. I love several places in El Born but Gracia and Poblenou also have a lot of good restaurants. The only thing that I would recommend is to stay away from the restaurants along the Ramblas, because these are only set up for tourists. If you’re not sure where to go, I can totally recommend joining a food tour to get to know the best spots and taste local dishes.
The nice thing about winter in Barcelona is that during the day you can often enjoy the sun out on the terraces, for instance along the harbor in Barceloneta.
When visiting Barcelona in winter you cannot miss out on churros con chocolate. For Spaniards it’s often a snack in between lunch and dinner time (around 5pm/6pm) or they have them for breakfast. Churros are fried crispy dough sticks which are often served with thick hot chocolate or sugar. You can find them at Christmas markets or at traditional xurrerías (special churro shops) like Xurreria La Pallaresa or Xurreria Manuel San Román.

Barcelona museums and famous sights
When you want to get a real feel of the history and culture of Barcelona there are the masterpieces of Gaudi that cannot be missed when visiting the city. Number one highlight is Sagrada Familia of course, which you should pre-book to get a time slot for visiting. Most of the time it is not possible anymore to just go there and get in. Near Sagrada Familia, you find Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau. We used to live nearby and I always took visitors here when they came to Barcelona. So this is also a place to go to.
I can also recommend visiting Casa Batlló, Casa Mila and Casa Vicens, the houses that Gaudi designed. And if the weather is nice when you are visiting Barcelona in winter, it’s fun to go and have a stroll at Park Güell.
Although the sun often shines in winter, there are some days that are cold and windy or even rainy. If this happens to you while you are visiting Barcelona, there are lots of museums to check out. Think of the Picasso Museum, the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya), and the Chocolate Museum. When traveling with kids you should definitely visit Cosmocaixa. My kids love this interactive science museum which offers lots of fun experiments for all ages.
Money-saving tip
Planning to visit multiple museums and sights? Then the Barcelona Card is worth considering. It gives you free access to many museums and discounts on attractions and public transport.
Hiking in and around Barcelona
My family and I love to go hiking and winter is the perfect time for it. In winter the temperatures are comfortable, while in summer it’s so unbelievably hot that you almost feel like you are melting. For me, winter in Barcelona and surroundings is perfect for hiking since you can enjoy the crisp air and lots of sunshine. One of my favourites in Barcelona is a walk along the waterfront, from Moll de les Drassanes to Moll de Pesca Bogatell or even further, where you can enjoy sea views and stop for tapas along the way. Or if you prefer the more local vibes, wander through Rambla del Poblenou, a lively neighborhood filled with cafés and restaurants.
If you are looking for something quieter and want to go outside of the city, head uphill to the Carretera de les Aigües in Collserola Natural Park. It’s a local favourite for jogging or walking with some of the best views over the entire city. It’s ideal to go here in winter. During the summer months it’s way to hot since there isn’t much shade up there.

Best day trips from Barcelona in winter
Outside of Barcelona there are lots of different things to see and do as well. This is the reason that I love living in Catalonia, because it is so diverse. You can head for the mountains, enjoy the beautiful coastline or visit medieval villages. A few of my preferred winter day trips from Barcelona include:
– Visiting Montserrat. Visible from afar you find Montserrat Monastery on top of a mountainous area. This place offers amazing views of the surroundings, and you can visit the Monastery itself. There is also the possibility to go hiking here, the trails are peaceful and beautiful in winter. It is possible to visit Montserrat by train and cable car or you can join a guided day tour from Barcelona.
– Go wine tasting in the Penedes wine region. If you are a big fan of wine, I’d recommend a visit to the Penedès area, which is famous for its sparkling Cava and scenic countryside. Many wineries offer guided tours with tastings, and winter is a great time to visit, because during this time it is a more tranquil and authentic local experience.
– Take the train along the coast to the north and visit some of the beautiful Costa Brava beach towns, like Tossa de Mar and Blanes. Even in winter, the beaches are beautiful for a stroll, and many restaurants are open year-round. The train ride from Barcelona is very scenic, since you have amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea.
– Visiting Sitges. A charming town to visit is the city of Sitges, which has an old but pretty city center and a beautiful beach. It’s nice to have a stroll along the beach here and go for a drink on one of the terraces. You can easily visit Sitges from Barcelona by train.
– If you love snow, you can even go skiing or snowboarding for a day. There are some ski resorts within a few hours’ drive of Barcelona, like Andorra or La Molina. From Barcelona you could easily book a ski or snowboard day tour if you are interested.
Travel tip
If you have enough time, it’s also fun to visit Madrid. The easiest way to go here is by train. Read all about it in my blog From Barcelona to Madrid by train.
Christmas in Barcelona
At the end of November Barcelona is getting ready for Christmas time. If you visit in December or even the beginning of January, the entire city sparkles with beautiful holiday lights. All the bigger streets like Passeig de Gràcia are decorated, and Christmas markets pop up all over the city. The most popular ones are at Plaça de la Sagrada Família and Pla de la Seu, next to the Cathedral. Here you can shop for ornaments or enjoy a hot drink while taking in the atmosphere.
Besides Christmas, a big winter celebration in Barcelona is the Three Kings on the 6th of January. On the day before, there is a big parade of the Three Kings, which is called Cabalgata de Reyes. This event marks the arrival of the Three Wise Men (Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar), who bring gifts to children across Spain. It’s fun to watch the parades, even if you are not traveling with kids.

Barcelona winter sales
Right after Christmas, Barcelona’s famous rebajas (winter sales) begin. This is of course the perfect excuse to go shopping during your holidays.
You’ll find major fashion brands along Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya, and Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel. For something more unique, explore El Born and Gràcia, where you can find lots of boutiques from local designers.
There is also an outlet shopping village, which is called La Roca village. Here you can find lots of famous designer shops and some smaller local shops where you can buy outlet goods for really good prices. It’s beautifully set up and makes for a nice experience when you want to go shopping.
When the weather in winter isn’t very welcoming in Barcelona there are also plenty of indoor shopping centers to go to. Diagonal Mar and Glories shopping center are two of the centers that have lots of nice shops.
Should you visit Barcelona in winter?
If you ask me, winter might just be the best time to visit Barcelona. You see more locals in the streets, and there’s a cozy, authentic feel that’s hard to find in summer. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a longer holiday, Barcelona in winter offers a great mix of culture, food, mild weather and plenty of things to do. And even a festive touch if you come around Christmas.
