Spain is known for its sunny beaches and sun-soaked streets, and Barcelona usually lives up to this reputation. But every now and then, the city gets a rainy day. Most of the time it’s just a short shower before the sun comes back, but occasionally you might experience a full day of rain. It doesn’t happen often, but if you’re visiting Barcelona when it rains, it can feel like your plans are suddenly limited, unless you know how to make the most of it.
Having lived in and around Barcelona for years, I’ve learned that a rainy day in Barcelona doesn’t have to ruin your trip. The city is full of amazing indoor activities, from museums and cultural sights to cozy cafés and unique workshops. In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do in Barcelona when it rains, so you can enjoy the city no matter what the weather looks like.

Visit Barcelona’s museums and indoor sights
When the weather turns grey, Barcelona’s indoor attractions are the place to go. The city is full of places where you can escape the rain while still soaking up culture, history, and architecture. From museums and Gaudí masterpieces to the Barcelona Aquarium, there’s plenty to explore without getting wet. Rainy days offer the perfect opportunity to discover these sights.
Gaudís work
The Sagrada Familia is the most famous of Gaudí’s work and a must visit when you’re in Barcelona. It also happens to be one of the best places in the city to escape the rain. The colored light that comes through the stained glass windows makes it such a magical place. If you want to visit, I recommend booking Sagrada familia entry tickets online in advance. Last-minute tickets can be tricky, but you can always try. There are QR codes outside the basilica to help you check availability.
If you are a fan of Gaudí you shouldn’t miss Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, and Casa Vicens either. They are all quite different and worth a visit. Casa Batlló, for example, feels almost like stepping into a fairy tale, while Casa Vicens, one of Gaudí’s earliest works, is a beautifully detailed house with strong Moorish and oriental influences. It’s interesting to compare his architectural style throughout the years.

Museums
There are lots of different museums in Barcelona to enjoy on a rainy day and I truly believe there’s something for everyone. If you are an art lover, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) is one of the best places to go. You can explore Catalan art from the Romanesque period to modern times, and on top of that, you get amazing views of the city since it is located on Montjuïc hill.
When you walk down with your umbrella towards Plaça d’Espanya, you’ll find CaixaFòrum, which combines contemporary art with fascinating temporary exhibitions. The Picasso Museum in Ciutat Vella is another art museum worth visiting. Not far from there, you’ll find the Chocolate Museum, so they’re easy to combine, although they offer completely different experiences.
And if you’re into FC Barcelona, the museum at Camp Nou is another great option. It showcases the club’s history, trophies, and interactive exhibits, making it an interesting stop on a rainy day.
Travel tip
If you want to visit multiple museums and attractions during your stay in Barcelona, you might want to consider buying the Barcelona Card. It gives you fast-track access to major sights, free public transport, and free or discounted entry to many museums and attractions.
Palau de la Música Catalana
Another indoor highlight that I love is the Palau de la Música Catalana. The exterior is beautiful, but wait till you see the inside. You can attend a concert here, but even if you don’t, you can take a guided tour, which is worth every minute. The colourful ceiling, elegant columns, and detailed mosaics make it one of the most beautiful indoor spaces I’ve ever visited.

Barcelona Aquarium
The Barcelona Aquarium is a fantastic indoor destination, especially for families. But even if you’re just adults, you can easily spend a couple of hours here while it’s raining outside. Its massive main tank, which you can explore through a glass tunnel, gives the impression of walking underwater among sharks, rays, and tropical fish. Me and my kids love the Barcelona Aquarium and what makes it even more special for them is the interactive play area at the end of the visit. This keeps the little ones entertained even longer, my kids never want to leave.
The aquarium is located near the Maremagnum shopping center, so you can continue exploring, stop for lunch or a snack, and stay dry without stepping back into the rain.

Travel tip
If you’re visiting Barcelona with children, CosmoCaixa, the science museum, is an absolute must. My kids love this place because it’s very interactive and they can do all sorts of experiments. You could easily spend a few hours here when it’s raining in Barcelona. If you’re looking for more fun things to do in Barcelona with kids, you’ll find plenty of great ideas in my complete guide.
Relax in a spa
Rainy weather can be the perfect excuse to treat yourself to some relaxation time in a spa. AIRE Ancient Baths Barcelona is one of the most serene places I’ve ever visited and an ideal escape from the rain. With thermal baths, soothing music, and a range of massages, it’s the perfect way to unwind and slow down in this busy city. A few hours at the spa on a rainy day is a wonderful way to see a different, more peaceful side of Barcelona.
Go to an indoor market
Indoor markets are a wonderful way to experience local life in Barcelona without getting wet. They’re perfect for buying fresh produce like fruits and vegetables and for chatting with local vendors. Many markets also have cafés or small bars where you can try authentic Catalan dishes if you get hungry.
You can find an indoor market in almost every neighborhood of Barcelona. La Boqueria is the most famous, but it has become very touristy and, in my opinion, isn’t the best place to experience a local market. For a more authentic experience, I recommend the lesser-known markets like Mercat de la Concepció, Mercat de la Llibertat, and Mercat del Clot. Morning visits are best, as some markets quiet down or even close in the afternoon.
Take a cooking class or workshop
Barcelona offers all sorts of workshops and classes, which is a great way to spend a couple of hours while the weather outside isn’t cooperating. You can try lots of different things, like flamenco dancing, painting, languages courses or cooking classes etc etc. There’s something for everyone.
Taking a cooking class is a lot of fun if you enjoy the Spanish cuisine, like me. It’s also a great opportunity to learn how to make tapas or paella at home too.
We once tried a ceramic workshop at Bescuit, and it was such a nice experience that I wanted to share it with you. Even though I’m not naturally creative, it was fun to learn a new skill and make something you can actually take home.
Go to one op the shopping centers
Barcelona is also a fantastic city for shopping, and fortunately, there are plenty of options to stay dry on a rainy day. Covered shopping centers like Maremagnum, Diagonal Mar, L’Illa, and Westfield Glòries offer a wide variety of stores under one roof, from international brands to local boutiques.
Around Plaça Catalunya, you’ll also find El Corte Ingles and El Triangle, which provide smaller indoor shopping options, perfect for a stroll while staying out of the rain.
Step into a cozy café or restaurant
When it’s pouring outside, there’s nothing better than finding a cozy café in Barcelona to spend some time to wait untill it’s dry again. Barcelona is full of charming spots where you can spend hours sipping coffee, enjoying pastries, or having a brunch or lunch.
I really like Alsur Café and Ugot, which are both perfect for brunch or a mid-afternoon coffee. But there are many more local gems that you can stumble upon when you need a quick shelter for the rain.

See the city from a hop on hop off bus
If you still want to see the city while you are in Barcelona even though its pouring, you can always take a hop on hop off bus. There are two main routes that cover the city’s most famous landmarks, allowing you to hop off at attractions and hop back on without getting soaked. It’s a practical way to enjoy Barcelona on a rainy day, especially if your time in Barcelona is limited.
Embrace the rain with an umbrella
Sometimes the best way to enjoy a rainy day in Barcelona is to just embrace it. Grab an umbrella, put on comfortable shoes, and explore the streets of the city. I’ve done this a few times when friends visited, and although it’s not the most ideal weather, you can still see and enjoy Barcelona which is better than not seeing it at all.
