Best time to visit Barcelona and the Costa Brava
The Costa Brava, Costa del Maresme and Barcelona enjoy a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea has a strong influence on the weather in this part of Catalonia, resulting in pleasant temperatures and relatively little rainfall throughout the year.
The best time to visit the Costa Brava or nearby Costa del Maresme largely depends on what you are looking for in a holiday. For many travellers, a beach holiday is the main reason to visit popular coastal towns such as Platja d’Aro on the Costa Brava. The ideal period for enjoying the beaches along the Mediterranean Sea runs from May to September. During these months, daytime temperatures usually range between 20°C and 28°C (68°F–82°F), and the sea temperature is also very comfortable.
If you prefer to avoid the busiest months and the highest prices, May, June and September are excellent alternatives. The weather in these months is perfect for exploring charming coastal towns and it’s often warm enough to enjoy a dip in the sea as well. If you are after a lively atmosphere with plenty of nightlife and events, July and August are the best option for you.
For a city break to Barcelona, the most pleasant months are April, May, September and October. During these months, temperatures are generally between 17°C and 25°C (63°F–77°F), which is ideal for sightseeing. Even in winter, Barcelona often enjoys sunny days, making it a surprisingly good destination for a city trip outside the main season.
In July and August, Barcelona can become very hot and humid, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 30°C (86°F). The high humidity makes it feel even warmer, and the city is extremely busy with tourists. Barcelona’s beaches are often crowded during summer. If you would rather avoid intense heat and large crowds, it is better to plan a city break to Barcelona outside the peak summer months.
January
January can feel chilly in northeast Spain, but there are also days when the winter sun makes it feel too warm for a thick coat. Average daytime temperatures in January are around 13–14°C (55°F–57°F) in Barcelona and along the Costa Brava. At night, temperatures usually stay above freezing and hover around 6–8°C (43°F–46°F). Packing layers is therefore a smart choice when travelling to this region during this month.
Rain is possible in January, but based on our own experience over the past ten years, March, April and November tend to be wetter. But the weather can be unpredictable sometimes, so if you happen to come across some rainy days, read our tips on what to do in Barcelona when it rains.
Having said this, January is most often a great month for a city trip to Barcelona. One of the biggest advantages is that the city is noticeably quieter than during most other months, allowing you to explore places such as the Gothic Quarter, the Sagrada Família and other highlights at a relaxed pace. January is also a calm period on the Costa Brava, often making it a more affordable time to travel.

February
The weather in February on the Costa Brava and in Barcelona is very similar to January and is generally quite pleasant. Daytime temperatures are usually around 14°C (57°F), while nights cool down to approximately 6°C (43°F). Rainfall does occur occasionally, but it is unlikely to affect your entire trip. Most often, it is limited to a few showers spread throughout the month.
February offers plenty of sunshine, especially along the coast. Sheltered from the wind, it can be very enjoyable to sit on a terrace or take a long walk along the beach. The weather is also perfect to go and do some sightseeing in Barcelona or one of the small Catalan villages that are well worth visiting. Overall, the weather in February is perfectly suitable for a trip to this part of Spain.

March
With the arrival of spring, days become longer in March and temperatures slowly start to rise in Barcelona and along the Costa Brava. The average daytime temperature lies around 15°C (59°F), with nights cooling down to about 7°C (45°F). I recommend you to bring warm clothing, but also take some lighter options, as you may already experience some lovely spring-like days.
The chance of rain and clouds is slightly higher than in January and February, but there is still a reasonable amount of sunshine. Some years see many rainy days, while others hardly any at all. On average, rainfall occurs on around five days in March, often in the form of short showers that tend to fall in the evening or at night.
Overall, March often brings pleasant weather, but it is not yet suitable for a classic sun-and-sea holiday. With sea temperatures around 13°C (55°F), swimming is still too cold for most people. That said, it is a great time for beach walks or a picnic by the sea on a sunny day.

April
The average daytime temperatures rise further in April and you can expect temperatures around 17–18°C (63°F–64°F) in Barcelona and the surrounding areas. Rain is still possible during this month, with roughly 40 mm spread over about five days. Depending on the year, you may experience more or fewer rainy moments during your stay.
In general, sunshine dominates, making it a lovely time to sit on a terrace in Barcelona or enjoy the coastline of the Costa Brava. There are many beautiful places on the Costa Brava where you can make the most of the weather in April, including coastal towns such as Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Begur.
Keep in mind that the week leading up to Easter, known as Semana Santa, is extremely busy throughout Spain. Many Spaniards travel during this period, so if you plan to visit Barcelona or the Costa Brava at this time, it is best to book flights and accommodation well in advance.
May
May is generally a bright and sunny month in Barcelona and along the Costa Brava. The weather is ideal for relaxing on the beach or exploring charming beach towns such as Cadaqués in the north of Catalonia. It is also an excellent time to visit cultural attractions in Barcelona.
Average daytime temperatures reach around 20°C (68°F) in May, while nighttime temperatures drop to approximately 12°C (54°F). Bringing layers for the evenings is therefore recommended. Rainfall is still possible, with around 55 mm during the month, usually in the form of brief showers. Despite this, May offers plenty of sunshine, with around eight hours of sun per day.
The sea remains fairly cool at about 17°C (63°F), which many people still find too cold for swimming. Overall, May is a wonderful time to visit the Costa Brava and Barcelona if you want pleasant temperatures without the intense heat and crowds of summer.

June
June marks the transition into summer, bringing warmer weather to the Costa Brava and Barcelona. Daytime temperatures typically range between 24°C and 25°C (75°F–77°F), often rising even higher towards the end of the month. Beach days become very appealing, and swimming is usually possible, as the sea warms up to around 21°C (70°F).
Along the beaches of the Costa Brava, many beach bars start opening in June and I love spending an afternoon or evening with a drink and a meal by the sea. Night-time temperatures drop to around 17°C (63°F), but evenings remain pleasantly warm. It is advisable though to bring a sweater or something else when you are staying out late.
If you are in Catalonia on the night of June 23rd to 24th, expect huge celebrations for Sant Joan, which marks the start of summer. Fireworks light up the entire region and festivities continue throughout the night.
Rainfall is minimal in June, with only about 30 mm across the entire month, mostly falling in the evening or at night. This makes June an excellent month for a city trip to Barcelona or a relaxing beach holiday on the Costa Brava or the Costa del Maresme.
July
July brings full summer conditions to the Costa Brava and Barcelona. Temperatures typically reach 27–28°C (81°F–82°F), and due to higher humidity, it often feels even warmer. The weather is mostly sunny and perfect for a beach holiday. Popular beaches in Lloret de Mar, Platja d’Aro and Barcelona attract large crowds. If you are visiting Barcelona and want a quieter beach experience, beaches just north of the city, such as in Badalona or along the Costa del Maresme, are often less crowded.
Evenings in July remain warm, making it ideal for outdoor dining or enjoying drinks with sea views. Light summer clothing is usually more than enough when you’re out in the evening.
One thing that you should be aware of is that July is a busy month due to school holidays, so booking flights and accommodation well in advance is highly recommended.
Tip
If you are sensitive to heat and prefer an active sightseeing holiday, you may want to consider travelling in spring or autumn instead. Especially in July and August, the high temperatures and the humidity can make sightseeing quite challenging, and days often revolve around swimming in the pool or the sea.

August
August offers similar summer weather to July across the Costa Brava and the rest of Catalonia. Daytime temperatures usually range between 27°C and 29°C (81°F–84°F), occasionally exceeding 30°C (86°F). The high humidity can make it feel very hot, but sunshine is almost guaranteed.
Rain is rare, although a brief summer shower may occur towards the end of the month, typically in the evening or at night. For city sightseeing, the heat can be intense, but beach days along the Costa Brava and in Barcelona are excellent. Sea temperatures reach around 25°C (77°F), making swimming very enjoyable.
August is the main holiday month for Spaniards, and coastal areas are lively and busy with both domestic and international tourists. This also creates a festive atmosphere, especially in the evenings. Many local festivals take place during this month, including the popular Festa Major de Gràcia in Barcelona. If you happen to be there during this time, I would definitely recommend you to go there.
September
Early September often still feels very much like summer in Barcelona and on the Costa Brava, with temperatures reaching up to 28°C (82°F). As the month progresses, conditions gradually become cooler. On average, daytime temperatures are around 25°C (77°F), with nights cooling to 17–18°C (63°F–64°F).
Swimming is usually still possible during the first part of September, and the sea remains pleasant throughout the month, with temperatures of around 23–24°C (73°F–75°F). Rainfall slowly increases again, with about five rainy days on average, but overall the weather remains sunny and stable. When the sun is out it’s often still warm enough to swim.
September is an excellent time to explore cities such as Barcelona and Girona or to enjoy the beaches of the Costa Brava, especially as the crowds begin to thin out after the school holidays.
October
October marks the start of autumn in Spain, but the weather is often still sunny and mild. Average temperatures are around 21–22°C (70°F–72°F), although warmer days do occur, sometimes making a swim in the sea still possible.
Rainfall increases further, and October is statistically the wettest month in Catalonia. Even so, rainfall typically occurs on about seven days during the month, but a full day of rain is the exception rather than the rule.
With plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, October is a great month for exploring places such as the medieval town of Pals or for hiking the scenic camí de ronda along the coast. The views are truly spectacular there. Overall, Barcelona and the Costa Brava remain very appealing destinations during this time of the year.

November
In November, the weather starts to feel more like autum in Barcelona and the surrounding region. Daytime temperatures average around 17°C (63°F) and rarely exceed 20°C (68°F). Nights are cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 9°C (48°F), and a cool breeze can make it feel colder. Warm clothing is therefore recommended.
Despite this, sunny days are still common, and sitting on a terrace in Barcelona can be very pleasant. There are often still days that you can take off your warm jacket while you’re enjoying some sun. Rainfall increases to around 65 mm spread over approximately five days. November is still a good time for a city break to Barcelona or Girona, particularly because it is generally quieter. Towards the end of the month, festive Christmas lights start appearing across many towns and cities in Catalonia.
December
December ends the year with mild winter weather in Barcelona and on the Costa Brava. Average daytime temperatures are around 14°C (57°F), and on sunny days it can feel surprisingly warm while walking through the city. Evenings are much cooler, with temperatures around 6°C (43°F), so a warm jacket is essential.
Rainfall is relatively low, with around 40 mm throughout the month, meaning dry weather is common. December is therefore a pleasant time to visit this part of Spain. It is also a festive month, and Barcelona truly shines with beautifully lit streets, Christmas markets and a wonderful holiday atmosphere. A visit to the Font Màgica at Montjuïc is highly recommended if you are in the city during this time of year.

Final thoughts
The Costa Brava, Costa del Maresme and Barcelona are destinations that can be enjoyed throughout the year, each season offering its own atmosphere and advantages. From sunny summer days on the beach to mild winter afternoons perfect for sightseeing, the Mediterranean climate makes this part of Catalonia surprisingly versatile.
Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your travel style and interests. Whether you are planning a relaxed seaside escape, an active city break or a mix of both, Barcelona and the surrounding coastline offer pleasant weather and memorable experiences in every season.
