Discovering Aigüestortes National Park in the Catalan Pyrenees

Years ago, I stumbled upon a photo of Aigüestortes National Park, officially called Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. It showed a turquoise lake perfectly framed by jagged mountain peaks. From that moment, it went straight onto my travel bucket list. But with COVID and very young kids, we had to wait a couple of years to finally visit.
When we finally visited for the first time, the park exceeded all my expectations. Standing there, surrounded by shimmering lakes and impressive waterfalls, it felt almost unreal. Every step revealed a new postcard-perfect scene, and I couldn’t stop taking photos. Catalonia’s only national park is simply incredibly beautiful.
In this blog post, I’ll share practical tips to help you make the most of your visit to this unforgettable part of the Catalan Pyrenees.

Why visit Aigüestortes National Park

Whether you’re looking for a gentle day hike or a multi-day mountain adventure, this park offers something for everyone. Over 200 mountain lakes (‘estanys’) are scattered throughout the park, accompanied by waterfalls and dramatic peaks. It’s a paradise for nature lovers. Even a short hike rewards you with spectacular scenery, but there are also numerous longer hikes that you can do. I’m sure you will be blown away by its beauty.

Where to base yourself: Espot or Vall de Boí?

One of the first decisions you need to make when visiting the park is where you want to base yourself, since there are two main access points: Espot in the east and Vall de Boí in the west. They are marked on the map below.

Espot is a charming mountain village, small enough to feel peaceful yet lively enough to serve as a perfect base for exploring the park. A clear and ice-cold river cuts right through the village, which makes Espot even more charming. Despite its size, Espot has everything you need. There are a few hotels, cosy restaurants and a small supermarket. You can also find the departure point for 4×4 taxis into the national park.
We stayed in Espot because our main goal was to visit the stunning Estany de Sant Maurici, which is closest from here. To reach it you can either take a 4×4 taxi directly to the lake or you can walk from the village, which takes roughly 75 minutes uphill. I would recommend taking the 4×4 taxis because I think it’s more rewarding to spend your time hiking from the Estany de Sant Maurici onward. Note that private cars aren’t allowed inside the park’s core.

Alternatively, you can choose the charming valley of Vall de Boí (with the villages of Boí and Taüll) as your base. This area is slightly more remote and offers a quieter atmosphere. In addition to hiking, you can explore the valley’s Romanesque churches, perfect if you want to combine hiking with cultural exploration.
From this area, you can access a variety of trails that lead into the western part of Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes, including high-altitude lakes, scenic ridges, and more secluded valleys.
You can start your hike directly from the villages, so you won’t need a car to reach the trails. There are several well-marked routes, from shorter walks connecting villages like Boí, Taüll, and Durro, to longer high-mountain hikes that take you to lakes such as Estany Llong or Estany Llebreta. Multi-day treks are also possible if you want to stay overnight in one of the mountain refugios.

Best hikes and highlights in Aigüestortes National Park

Once you’re inside Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, it becomes immediately clear why this is considered one of the most beautiful places in Catalonia. Nearly every trail rewards you with scenery that feels almost unreal. Here are a few highlights that you really shouldn’t miss.

This lake is the reason that we went to visit this national park and it’s the park’s best known viewpoint. The lake is the perfect starting point for many of the hikes in the park. There are hikes of varying lengths. One of the most rewarding is the loop around Estany de Sant Maurici, which passes by Cascada de Ratera and the smaller Estany de Ratera. For those looking for something shorter, a simple walk to the Ratera waterfall and back is beautiful too. Multi-day hikes are also possible, staying overnight in mountain huts, or refugios, inside the park.

If you’re staying on the Vall de Boí side, you can hike to Estany Llong, a tranquil lake surrounded by steep mountainsides. The trail starts in a quiet valley of pine trees and open meadows, slowly making its way up to the lake. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic, a rest, or simply soaking in the scenery. From Llac Long, more experienced hikers can continue toward Refugi Ventosa i Calvell, one of the refugios along the famous Carros de Foc route.

If you have more time and want to go on a multi-day hike the Carros de Foc might be a perfect option for you. This loop is one of the most iconic trekking routes in the Pyrenees. You can stay in several mountain huts along the way. The trek is challenging and requires preparation, but the payoff is immense: remote lakes, high passes and incredible views that you can’t get on a day hike. If you prefer to have everything arranged for you, you could also join a guided Carros de Foc trek.

What to do around Aigüestortes National Park

If you’ve explored the main trails of Aigüestortes or if you are looking for some other activities as well, the surrounding area offers plenty of things to do.
Just a short drive from Espot, you’ll find Cascada de Gerber, a tall and dramatic waterfall tucked into a narrow valley. From the parking area it is just a short hike through the forest to get there. We were amazed to find it here. Note that swimming is no option here since there is no big pool below and the water is cold as ice, even when we visited in summer.
If you’re visiting in summer and looking for a fun place to swim, you could go to nearby Panta de la Torrassa, We parked the car near RocRoi Adventure Center and swam a bit there and rented a paddle boat, but you can also rent kayaks or just go for a swim. It’s a relaxing spot, ideal for an easy afternoon.
We’re a family with young kids, so we haven’t tried this ourselves yet, but if you are an adventure lover, there are loads of options for rafting, canyoning, climbing, and canoeing in and around Sort and Llavorsí.
If you’re based in Vall de Boí, you also have lots of adventurous options such as canyoning and climbing, but if you are looking for something calmer, you can go fishing, visit the UNESCO-listed Romanesque churches or wander through the villages in the area.
In winter the entire region of Aigüestortes changes completely. When snow starts to fall it becomes a peaceful, white landscape, where snowshoeing, ski touring and snowy walks become the norm. The trails may be more challenging and some may be closed, but the mountains covered in snow are so incredibly beautiful.

Where to stay when visiting Aigüestortes National Park

In Espot we recommend the comfortable and well-located Hotel Els Encantats. The staff are super friendly and helpful. While we didn’t stay here ourselves, we did spend time at the hotel when they kindly invited us inside to shelter from the rain and they took excellent care of us.
The hotel is centrally located in the village and very close to the taxi pick-up point for entering Aigüestortes National Park.

If you prefer camping, there are several options near Espot. We stayed at Camping Sol i Neu once, which is a a small, quiet campsite which only caters to people traveling with their own camping equipment.
Other nice campsites are Camping Voraparc and Camping La Mola.

Travel tip

Book your accommodation ahead, especially during the high season! Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is quite popular and especially during the summer holidays all accommodation types fill up quickly.

If you have more time and energy to do longer treks, you can stay in one of the mountain huts in Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. There are various options that you can choose from. You can see all locations below and book online via Refusonline.com.

How to get to the National Park

Reaching Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is easiest by car, but there are options for public transport as well. Whether you drive or take public transport, plan extra time for the last stretch into the park and remember that hiking or taking a taxi is usually required to reach most trails.

From Barcelona the drive takes roughly 3,5–5 hours via the C-16 highway and the N-260, depending on traffic. You can stop along the way in scenic towns like La Seu d’Urgell or Sort for a break. From Girona you should expect about 4–5 hours, taking the AP-7 south and then connecting to the C-16/N-260. If you are coming from the Aragonese side, for example Benasque, it takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to Vall de Boí and roughly 2 hours 25 minutes to Espot.
As I mentioned before private cars are not allowed in the park’s central areas, so if you drive to Espot, you will need to take a 4×4 taxi or walk to reach places like Estany de Sant Maurici. From Vall de Boí, many trails start directly from the villages, so a car is not required once you’re there.

Public transport to Aigüestortes is possible but more limited. In summer, a bus from La Pobla de Segur goes into the park. La Pobla de Segur itself is accessible via the RL2 train from Lleida. If relying solely on public transport, plan your connections carefully, as schedules are seasonal and buses may not reach all park access points. Public transport and park bus services are seasonal, so always check the current timetable before your trip.

Things to know before visiting Aigüestortes

Before heading into Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, keep the following tips in mind.

I totally recommend you to wear good hiking shoes when going on a hike in the park. If you just want to take a 4×4 taxi up to Estany de Sant Maurici and back, sturdy shoes are not essential but when going further you should expect rocky and steep trails. Proper footwear is even more important after rainfall when paths near the lakes and waterfalls can be muddy or slippery.

The 4×4 taxis from Espot and certain mountain huts may not accept card payments. A small amount of cash can make your day much easier.

Swimming in the lakes and wild camping are not permitted anywhere within the national park, to protect the fragile ecosystem. if you’re planning a multi-day hike, make sure to stay in one of the official refugios.
While enjoying the beauty of the park, always stay on the marked trails, avoid feeding wildlife, and take out everything you bring in. And if you’re lucky enough to spot animals along the way, remember to keep a respectful distance. This will keep both you and the wildlife safe.

Large parts of the park have little to no cellphone coverage, including the 112 emergency service. So please don’t rely on your phone for navigation or emergencies. You can download offline maps or carry a physical one if you’re heading into the mountains.

Start your days around the park early. The morning hours offer the best light, quieter trails, more wildlife activity, and more stable weather. If you want that postcard view of Estany de Sant Maurici without the crowds, early is absolutely worth it. Also, summer temperatures can rise quickly, so starting early keeps things more comfortable and far less tiring.

Since weather conditions can impact your visit to the park a lot, it’s wise to check this before heading out. Tourist information offices in Espot and Boí are incredibly helpful and they can tell you which trails are open, safe, and suitable for your level.

Peak season means planning ahead. Summer is the busiest period in the park. Accommodation, taxis, and parking in the villages can fill up quickly. If you want to use the taxi service from Espot, I recommend you to book ahead. We wanted to visit the park early in the morning and booked our tickets the day before at the taxi stand.
The other seasons offer fewer crowds but come with shorter days and more variable conditions, which you should check before and make sure to prepare yourself for different weather conditions.

Best time to visit Aigüestortes National Park

The best time to visit Aigüestortes really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for, because the park changes with the seasons.
Summer is the most accessible and popular season. Trails are open, daylight is long, and the landscape is at its greenest. In autumn the whole park takes on a more peaceful atmosphere with fall colors and quieter trails. Winter and early spring turn the park into a snowy wilderness, which is beautiful, but definitely more challenging. Heavy snowfall closes many trails or makes them accessible only with special gear. Whenever you choose to go, the park is beautiful all year long and definitely worth your time.

Travel tip

Something you always need to keep in mind when planning your hikes here is that mountain weather is unpredictable. Even on a seemingly perfect day, conditions can change within minutes. Mornings are usually calm and clear, while afternoons are often more cloudy and storms are not unusual.
