Why take the train from Barcelona to Madrid?
Opting for rail travel rather than flying or driving comes with several advantages. Here’s why the train is such a popular choice.
Fast and comfortable
The high-speed trains connecting Barcelona and Madrid take you from one city centre to the other in just 2.5 to 3 hours. No airport transfers, no stress, and no need to arrive ridiculously early. Simply walk into Barcelona Sants station and step out at Madrid’s central Atocha station. Compared to driving, you skip the six-hour journey, motorway traffic, fuel costs, and expensive parking.
Barcelona Sants is easy to navigate, security checks are quick, and before you know it, you’re settled in your seat, ready for departure. The same goes for Atocha station in Madrid, it’s well organised and hassle free. Onboard, the seats are comfortable, there’s free Wi-Fi, and food and drinks are available.

A more sustainable way to travel
If conscious travel is important to you, the train between Barcelona and Madrid is an excellent choice. High-speed trains in Spain run mostly on electricity, making them a far more environmentally friendly option than domestic flights or rental cars. Instead of contributing to the high carbon footprint of short-haul flights, you’re choosing a mode of transport that significantly reduces your impact.
If you’re planning to explore multiple cities in Spain, like Valencia, Seville, or Málaga, hopping from city to city by train is not only convenient, but also one of the most responsible ways to travel. The high-speed network connects major destinations seamlessly, meaning you can see more of the country without adding unnecessary pollution. It’s a simple way to enjoy Spain while keeping your environmental footprint as small as possible.
Which trains run from Barcelona to Madrid?
Several rail operators serve this route, each offering different prices and comfort levels. The easiest way to compare them is through a specialized platform like Omio, which allows you to book in English and view all options in one place.
Renfe AVE
Renfe’s AVE trains are known for their comfort. There are several fare types to choose from, and all of them offer a pleasant travel experience, with generous legroom, free Wi-Fi, multiple pieces of luggage included, and even quiet zones if you prefer silence during your trip. You can select this option during the booking process.
Catering is available on board, either through a trolley service or in a designated café carriage.
The main downside of taking an AVE train between Barcelona and Madrid is that it’s usually the most expensive option, unless you book in advance. In which case sometimes the tickets are quite affordable. Tickets can be purchased through Renfe’s official website, which is available in English.
OUIGO
OUIGO is a French operator that offers budget-friendly double-decker trains between Barcelona and Madrid. The cheapest seats are simple but comfortable enough for a few hours. If you want to have more comfort you can pay more to upgrade your travel experience with larger seats and more flexibility.
The basic fare includes one piece of hand luggage and a small bag. Additional baggage requires a higher fare type. The more expensive tickets also include Wi-Fi, movies (currently only in Spanish or Catalan) and games. These options are not available in the basic fare.
The OUIGO website and app are user-friendly and available in English, which makes buying tickets very easy.
Iryo
Iryo is the newest competitor on the route between Barcelona and Madrid. They offer modern, stylish trains with surprisingly comfortable seating, even in the lowest fare type. There’s plenty of legroom, generous luggage space, and free Wi-Fi and USB ports. There are optional higher fare categories, which include additional luggage and, in some cases, onboard meals. Prices of the Iryo trains often fall between OUIGO and Renfe AVE. Tickets are easily booked through the English-language website Iryo.eu.
Travel tip
Before booking, always check luggage charges, especially for larger suitcases as they can significantly increase the final price.
Departing from Barcelona: Sants Station
The high-speed trains to Madrid depart from Barcelona Sants station. This is a large but well-organised train station not far from Plaça d’Espanya. It’s easy to reach by metro, train or taxi. Arriving at Sants station around 30 minutes before departure is usually sufficient.
Similar to an airport check, your luggage goes through a quick scanner. After security, there are plenty of places to sit and buy snacks or drinks until it’s time to leave. Note that prices at the train station are similar to those at airports, so buying food beforehand can save you money.
When your train is about to depart you can walk directly to your platform to board the train. Having your ticket downloaded to your phone is enough to board the train.

What is the Barcelona to Madrid train journey like?
Once the train leaves Barcelona, the city views slowly change to countryside views. The route runs through rural Spain, passing hills, villages, olive trees, and wide plains. The views around Zaragoza are especially scenic, so choose a window seat if you prefer to enjoy the views.
As mentioned earlier, onboard comfort depends on the operator, but in general, seats are good, there’s enough space for your legs, Wi-Fi is available (though occasionally unreliable), and you can enjoy a snack or drink. One of the best things about train travel is having uninterrupted time, to read, listen to a podcast, or simply watch the scenery fly by. Before you know it, you’re rolling into Madrid.
Arriving in Madrid: Atocha Station
High-speed trains from Barcelona arrive at Madrid’s Atocha Station, located right in the city centre.
Atocha has several levels, which you notice mainly when you depart from Madrid. When arriving, it’s quite simple: you enter at ground level and walk straight out into the city. The central location is ideal for visiting the city. From Atocha train station, you can walk or take the metro to major sights like Retiro Park or the Prado Museum. The metro is directly underneath the station.
Food and drink options are available at Atocha station, though, like at Barcelona Sants train station, they’re priced similarly to airport shops.
Note: Renovations are currently underway, but they generally cause minimal inconvenience.

Barcelona to Madrid train: Practical tips
Here are some helpful tips if you are travelling from Barcelona to Madrid for the first time.
Reserve your tickets early
Cheap tickets sell out quickly, especially on weekends. Most companies release seats 4–5 months in advance, so it’s wise to buy your tickets around that time. Use Omio to compare prices and schedules, or book directly with the operator.
Prepare your entertainment ahead of time
Although Wi-Fi is available on board (depending on the fare), the connection can be unstable or temporarily unavailable during the trip. To avoid frustration, it’s a good idea to download a podcast, movie, e-book or playlist before departure. If you prefer a calm environment, Renfe’s quiet carriages are a great option and can be selected during booking.
Bring your own snacks and drinks
Catering on the Barcelona-Madrid route varies by train company but tends to be on the pricey side. Bringing your own snacks and drinks will make sure you have something you like and saves you money. If you do prefer to buy something on board, there is often a special carriage reserved for catering and a trolley service offering drinks and snacks, and sometimes even full meals.
Travelling with kids
Train travel is great for families, children can move around more freely than on a plane or in a car. Many operators offer family tickets or discounts for children. Kids often travel for free or at a reduced rate, so check the policies of the different operators before booking.
